Then we recommend the right combination of air sealing and insulation instead of simply piling more material on top of the old stuff.

Air sealing usually comes first. Gaps around top plates, chimneys, plumbing stacks, recessed lights and attic hatches let warm, moist air leak into the attic, which wastes energy and can lead to frost, mold and ice dams. Once those leaks are sealed, we add insulation to the appropriate depth, maintain soffit ventilation with baffles, and insulate basement rim joists that are often overlooked. The result is fewer drafts, more even temperatures between rooms and a heating and cooling system that doesn't have to work as hard.
