The staircase is often the first thing people see when they walk in, and it gets used dozens of times a day. We replace carpeted stairs with hardwood treads, swap dated spindles for modern iron or square wood balusters, install new newel posts and handrails, and rebuild basement or attic stairs that are steep, loose or simply worn out.

Stairs are one area where looks and safety go hand in hand. Handrails need to be graspable and firmly anchored, balusters must be spaced to protect small children, and rise and run should be consistent from step to step to prevent trips. When we alter or rebuild a stair, we pull permits where required and follow current code. When we're simply refreshing finishes, we still tighten squeaky treads and loose rails so the staircase feels as solid as it looks.
