Why does tile crack, and how do you prevent it?
Most cracked tile traces back to a floor that flexes too much, poor thinset coverage or a lack of movement joints. We check deflection, stiffen or add subfloor where needed, use uncoupling membranes on problem substrates, and back-butter large tiles for full contact. Perimeter and field movement joints let the floor handle seasonal changes.
Can tile go directly over a concrete basement floor?
Often, yes, after we check the slab for moisture, cracks and flatness. On slabs with existing cracks, an uncoupling membrane helps isolate the tile from movement. Porcelain tile is a very good choice for basements in the Toledo area because it handles moisture well.
What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain?
Porcelain is made from finer clay fired at higher temperatures, so it is denser and absorbs less water. That makes it better for floors, showers and high-traffic areas. Ceramic is softer and easier to cut, which suits walls and backsplashes well.
