Why It Matters Here
Clay soils across the former Great Black Swamp hold water and expand when frozen, which is why so many patios in Northwest Ohio sink, crack or heave within a few years. A deep, well-compacted base with good drainage is essential here. Pavers handle freeze-thaw movement better than large slabs because they flex and can be reset if needed. Heavy spring rains and summer storms make pitch and drainage critical near the house, especially in Toledo neighborhoods with older foundations and high water tables.

Are pavers better than concrete for a patio?
Pavers tolerate ground movement well and individual units can be lifted and reset, which is a real advantage in freeze-thaw climates. Stamped concrete offers a seamless decorative look but can crack as the ground moves. Both can perform well with a properly built base. We will help you weigh appearance, budget and maintenance.
How do you keep pavers from sinking or shifting?
It comes down to the base. We excavate, add fabric where needed, then install and compact crushed aggregate in layers before setting pavers on bedding sand. Edge restraints hold the field in place, and polymeric sand locks joints and discourages weeds and ants.
Can you build a patio on a sloped yard in the Toledo area?
Yes. Many Toledo and Northwest Ohio yards slope toward or away from the house. We use retaining walls, steps and grading to create level terraces while keeping water draining away from the foundation. Walls over certain heights may require engineering or permits, which we coordinate.
When is the best time to build a patio?
Patios are typically built from spring through late fall, whenever the ground is not frozen. Spring and early summer fill up quickly, so planning over the winter helps secure a spot. We can design and quote your project anytime of year.
